Ever since the cryptocurrency bull run of late 2017, cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency-related companies have begun to grow increasingly commonplace.
What’s more, they have also become increasingly mainstream areas for individuals to invest in, with numerous celebrities in some way affiliated with cryptocurrency ventures. The world famous tennis player Serena Jameka Williams is the latest one to join this growing club.
Williams recently revealed her Coinbase investment
Specifically, Williams recently published an Instagram post revealing that she had silently launched an investment firm called Serena Ventures back in 2014. Most notably, she is also said to have made an investment in the well-known cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase.
Williams claimed that the fund was launched ”with the mission of giving opportunities to founders across an array of industries. Serena Ventures invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity.”
As such, it is perhaps not too surprising to see that Coinbase is among the companies in which Williams’ fund has invested. Cryptocurrencies, and Coinbase by extension, can be seen as spearheading a move towards individual (financial) empowerment.
Moreover, the official Serena Ventures website also states that the fund is seeking to support companies with a diverse set of founders, with a reported 60% of ”diverse founder investments”.
The total market capitalization of the fund is said to amount to more than $12 billion, although it is unclear exactly how large a part of this is made up of the Coinbase investment. Nevertheless, the fund is stated to have invested in more than 30 separate companies.
Williams is married to the Reddit co-founder and seasoned investor Alexis Ohanian
Williams is best known for her tennis carrier, which has seen her rake home four Olympic gold medals. In addition to this, the Women’s Tennis Association has also named Williams the world’s best tennis player in single games on a whopping eight separate occasions.
Furthermore, Williams is no stranger to investments and entrepreneurial ventures. Prior to the official launch of the Serena Ventures fund, Williams has, for example, invested in the feminine hygiene product subscription service LOLA.
Other notable LOLA investors include the actors Lena Dunham and Allison Williams. Moreover, Williams is also married to Alexis Ohanian, one of the co-founders of the social media giant Reddit and co-founder of the early-stage venture capital fund Initialized Capital.
In addition to this, news of Williams’ Coinbase investment comes as Reuters recently reported that cryptocurrency and blockchain-related investments will likely reach a new all-time high this year.
As such, it seems Williams’ Coinbase investment comes at an opportune time – although it is unclear exactly when the Coinbase investment took place. Nevertheless, this high-profile investment will likely further validate Coinbase as an attractive financial holding.
